Drop Ball Test – Impact Resistance test for sunglasses

Drop ball test is a type of test which tests the ability of sunglasses or lenses for sunglasses to resist breakage or significant deformation under the impact of 16g steel ball dropped through 1.27m height.

This is one of the main requirements from US Customs for exporting sunglasses and spectacle frames to the US. As per FDA requirement 21 CFR 801.410 , Sunglasses and lenses for spectacles sold in the US must comply with the impact resistant lens regulation. A certificate illustrating the lens compliance with the 21 CFR 801.410 should accompany each lot of sunglasses and spectacle lenses seeking entry into the US. The certificate should reflect that the eyewear has been sampled and are impact resistant, using a statistically significant method.

Drop ball test or impact resistance test is also part of the sunglasses standard BS EN ISO 12312-1:2013+A1:2015. In this test a 16g ball with a dimeter of 16mm is dropped on the surface of sunglasses fitted into the frames from a height of 1.27m. The equipment which is used for the test is called drop ball tester.
